On September 16, 2019, a solemn reception of radiation portal monitors handed over to the State Customs Service of the Republic of Uzbekistan as gratuitous assistance was held at the Ayritom border customs post of the Surkhandarya Region's Customs Administration.
The event was organized within the framework of the Memorandum of Cooperation between the State Customs Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the US Department of Energy to prevent illicit trafficking of nuclear and radioactive materials.
The ceremony was attended by the Special Representative of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan for Afghanistan, Ismatilla Irgashev, US Ambassador to Uzbekistan Daniel Rosenblum, Head of the Information and Communication Technologies Department of the State Customs Committee D. Maksumov and others.
It was noted that the state customs authorities provide significant assistance to participants of foreign economic activity in conducting export-import operations. To ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of this process, new innovative and communication technologies are regularly introduced into the activities of customs authorities.
Radiation portal monitors are widely used to detect and prevent the illicit trafficking of radioactive materials in vehicles, baggage, as well as among pedestrians traveling through border customs posts, and also serve to increase efficiency in this area.
The transfer of the same equipment to the customs post "River Port" of the foreign economic activity is expected.
During the event, guests also got acquainted with the activities of the border customs post “Ayritom” and the logistics center “Termiz Kargo Center”.
The Republic of Uzbekistan and the United States are partners in the fight against the spread of dangerous nuclear, biological, chemical and radiological materials on the basis of the Agreement on Cooperation in the Field of Defense and the Prevention of the Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction, signed in 2001.
